International

A Link with China

The International dimension forms an important aspect of the humanities specialism of The Elmgreen School. We were therefore delighted that Barbara Modzelan led a Lambeth curriculum visit to Harbin, Heiliongjang Province, China in October 2006.

The purpose of the visit was to better understand the Chinese education system and to establish school links. The delegation visited primary and secondary schools as well as Harbin Normal University and its teacher training college, the Star College.

The Elmgreen School forged a successful link with Harbin 17 School, which is the largest school in Harbin.

It has 6,000 students and 400 teachers (of which only 30 are men ) There are 96 classes with an average of 60 students per class. Ms Wang Hui Ling the headteacher is delighted with the partnership and we hope that our students and staff will have the opportunity of writing letters and emails to Harbin School and will establish some joint curriculum projects.

The Bettine-von-Arnim Gesamtschule in Germany

The Bettine-von-Arnim Gesamtschule is  a Comprehensive school. It is a mixed school and  students do not wear school uniform. It is a fairly new idea to teach students with mixed ability and with SEN in a mainstream school. Students are streamed and move annually to different classes, according to their achievements. This results in a very positive learning environment and excellent results.

The B-v-A School is committed to link with The Elmgreen School, exchanging letters with students, work on common projects in the future and hopefully organise student exchanges in the future.

Parent Promoters in Belfast - Hazelwood Integrated College, Co Antrim

In October 2006 Noreen Campbell, former headteacher of Hazelwood College visited The Elmgreen School. Following our meeting Barbara Modzelan travelled to Belfast to see the first parent promoted school in the Belfast Board area; established to encourage reconciliation and mutual understanding through educational excellence. Hazelwood is a comprehensive school accepting a range of children of all abilities and is determined to ensure the best for all its students. It encourages parents to contribute to the governance of the college and to support the college in the education and development of their children.

Hazelwood is an outward looking school and has partner schools all over the world. The Elmgreen School has is proud to have established a strong link with the school and we hope that this partnership will offer staff and students at both schools many rich opportunities and experiences in the future.
