Buildings Update

The Elmgreen School Building - Inspiring Learning

Following a lengthy competitive process, Lambeth Building Schools for the Future have selected the architectural team of Scott Brownrigg and David Adjaye Associates, along with the contractor Alfred McAlpine to build our new school on Elmcourt Road. Scott Brownrigg have consistently been in the top 20 of UK architectural practices over the last few years, and David Adjaye is an award winning architect renowned for buildings such as the Ideas Store inWhitechapel.

The innovative design has been developed with the library at the heart of the school. This overlooks a large central marketplace surrounded by the main hall, activities studio and restaurant. The welcoming entrance will open out to the reception area next to the administration offices and community room. Curriculum areas are carefully clustered together and will make full use of colour to ensure the school easily navigable.

The design has located the building to allow maximum use of the outdoor green and sports space. In addition to the various multi use games pitches there will be an external amphitheatre, dining terrace, environmental science gardens and hard and soft social spaces. Careful consideration has been given to the boundary treatment, with a tree screen lining the perimeter of the site.

Work began on the new site in December 2007. For further information contact the Lambeth BSF Team at bsfenquiries@lambeth.gov.uk.
