School girl bus crash horror

An Elmgreen school girl had a lucky escape when a crane crashed into the Battersea bus that she was travelling on at the weekend.

Dyanni, who was on the top deck, was one of 30 children on the 345 bus when the accident happened in Battersea Park Road on Saturday morning.

Dyanni, 12, and the other children escaped unhurt but there was panic when the top deck passengers had to squeeze down the crushed staircase as the bus was tilting over.

The Year Seven pupil, who was on the top deck, was on her way to the Science Museum when she saw the crane arm come hurtling towards the bus. The lorry that was carrying it had come under a bridge that wasn’t tall enough for the crane.

“It was so sudden” said Dyanni. “The crane crashed through the window and there was glass everywhere and some children were screaming.”

Two fire engines, an ambulance and police cars came to the scene. They made sure nobdy was hurt before taking them to a cafe.

Eventually, a replacement bus came and took everyone back to Brixton. Dyanni and her mum decided to go to the Science Museum another day and went home to recover from the accident.

The Elmgreen School Report spoke to pupil Simon’s mother. She was, until recently, a bus driver and explained that when an emergency happens the driver presses a code red button to alert the police and emergency services.

She said the passengers' safety must always come first and bus drivers are taught first aid. Fortunately in this accident it wasn’t needed.

Simon’s mum also talked about the experience of being a woman bus driver: “It is male dominated and quite a tough job. There can be a lot of stress, especially when  passengers are being rude to you.”
